Detailed Description

Selected annually as a celebration of the distillery staff, Balcones Single Barrel Staff Collection (Cask 3549) was the 2014 release of this tradition. The release is now sold out online. Fortunately, when Balcones’ new distillery opens this year, they will have more production capacity – and, in turn, wider distribution – so keep an eye out for more Balcones in more states in the future. Bottled at cask strength, this Staff Collection release is a whopping 62.5% ABV.

Balcones Single Barrel Staff Selection (Cask 3549) Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Something of a rabbit hole – initially there’s liquorice and icing sugar, reminiscent of blue Liquorice Allsorts. Go deeper and there’s molasses, cherry liqueur, tobacco, and deeper still, a little rancio.

Palate: Thick and juicy with lots of oak toastiness as well as more venerable oak, that sort of antique furniture note. There’s treacle, honey and bourbon sweetness as well as the red fruit edge from the nose.

Finish: Flaky dark chocolate with some chocolate raisins, Fry’s turkish delight and coffee cream.

Distillery Information

Balcones Distilling was the first Texas whisky maker since prohibition. Although it was not the first distillery, Garrison Brothers is slightly older, it was the first to release a whisky. Founded by Chip Tate and Jared Himstedt in 2008, it has grown to become one of the largest craft distilleries in Texas, with an innovative and diverse core range of whiskies.
