Lot 17 is the 2017 release of St George’s single malt whiskey. The distillery was one of the first, if not the first, to produce single malt in the USA, and it was the first thing that master distiller Lance Winters made – the reason why he started the distillery in the first place. It’s a vatting of 19 barrels, aged for between six and eight years. It’s a mix of different types of cask, with ex-bourbon casks, port and dessert wine casks all on the list. It’s bold, fruity, rich and spicy – a very American take on single malt.

Nose: Buttery at first, with a hint of brioche developing underneath. Marzipan, hickory, apricot and lemon.
Palate: Walnut loaf, pear drops, waxy peels, a touch of white wine.
Finish: Fizzy oak spices and some black pepper. Poached pear notes persist.
Distillery Information
St. George Spirits is an American craft distillery in Alameda, California that has been producing spirits for the last 35 years. Founded by Jörg Rupf, it was the first small distillery to open after the collapse of Prohibition. Jörg was eventually joined by Lance Winters, a former nuclear scientist and brewer and they worked together distilling spirits for the next 20 years. In 2010, Jörg retired from 28 years of service as master distiller at the company. The spirits the company currently continues to make include single malt whiskey, agricole rum, Absinthe, gin, vodka (including flavored versions), apple brandy and liqueurs. St. George Absinthe Verte, which debuted in 2007, was the first legal Absinthe made in the USA since it was banned in 2007. Queues formed at the distillery, and all bottles sold out in four hours.
