Detailed Description

Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash 2016, like its predecessor a few years back, will likely stir the fires of controversy around American whiskey pricing. Whatever the case, what we can tell you about it this go around is it’s a blend of six barrels chosen by outgoing Michter’s master distiller Willie Pratt. This release is his final swan song before he’s replaced by Pamela Heilmann at the helm as the first ever female master distiller at a Kentucky facility currently producing whiskey.

Michter’s Celebration 2016 Sour Mash Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Initially leads with dried fig, dark brown sugar, caramel, milk chocolate, and tobacco. Soon after, classic notes of orange, cocoa, cherry wood, cigar box and peach appear. Given a minute’s rest, toasted oak and marshmallow comingle to become s’mores.

Palate: Dark caramel leads on entry, followed by cocoa, orange, vanilla and hints of tobacco, nearly mirroring its aromas. A bit of heat arrives at mid-palate mingled with slightly assertive grain notes (the 33-year-old rye having a say), pronounced but balanced oak and milk chocolate revisit with grassy rye on the finish.

Finish: Long and Spicy.

Distillery Information

Bomberger’s Distillery, more recently Michter’s Distillery, is a non-operating distillery facility that was, at the end of the twentieth century, believed to be the oldest remaining such building in the United States. The distillery closed in 1989 and may have since been demolished.
