Bourbon is a style of corn-based, barrel-aged whiskey that originated in the southern United States. The vast majority of Bourbon is made in Kentucky, which remains its spiritual home. Other states produce Bourbon however, particularly Kentucky’s neighbor Tennessee. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement of 1994, Tennessee whiskey can be classified as Bourbon, although a number of well-known Tennessee whiskey producers opt not to use the term. Other states which produce Bourbon include New York, Virginia, Illinois, Colorado and Massachusetts. Jefferson’s Presidential Select 25 Year Bourbon aged in new oak barrels and bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV). Inspired by its namesake Founding Father, these mature and exceptionally full-bodied aged bourbons were released nationally in November 2013.

Jefferson’s Presidential Select 25 Year Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet with hints of butter and peanuts.

Palate: Lots of sweetness on the tip of the tongue giving way to some corn and slightly lower oak flavors than you would expect from a bourbon that has spent a quarter century in an oak barrel. There is a very subtle complexity on the back end, with some sugars and vanilla and rye notes rounding out the flavor.

Finish: Incredibly smooth, almost too smooth. The finish is short, but satisfying, with very little bite.

Distillery Information

Founded in 1997, Jefferson’s is the brainchild of Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, a famed bourbon historian. They were continuing a family tradition that goes back to Trey’s 8th generation grandmother who was arrested in 1799 for the “production and sales of spirituous liquors.” To personify the brand, they chose Thomas Jefferson—known for his curiosity and experimental spirit. This is a mindset to which Trey has dedicated himself, pushing the boundaries of the definition of bourbon. Upholding tradition, yet always discovering new possibilities.
