James Oliver Bourbon Barreled American whiskey is named for James Oliver Turner, who is the grandfather of founder Robert Turner. This whiskey from Portland, Oregon distiller Indio Spirits is made from a high-rye mash bill aged in two different barrels. First it spends time in an ex-bourbon barrel. It is then finished in a former sherry cask.

Nose: The nose is sharp and astringent at first; grassy and grainy. But apple and lavender eventually come through as well.

Palate: The taste is bright and young, with lots of citrus, wood, sawdust, oatmeal, and honey. The sherry doesn’t seem to have much effect overall.

Finish: Lingering and rich.
